Exodus 21:1 (NET) New English Translation

1 "These are the decisions that you will set before them:
2 "If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years, but in the seventh year he will go out free without paying anything.
3 If he came in by himself he will go out by himself; if he had a wife when he came in, then his wife will go out with him.
4 If his master gave him a wife, and she bore sons or daughters, the wife and the children will belong to her master, and he will go out by himself.
5 But if the servant should declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,'
6 then his master must bring him to the judges, and he will bring him to the door or the doorposts, and his master will pierce his ear with an awl, and he shall serve him forever.
7 "If a man sells his daughter as a female servant, she will not go out as the male servants do.
8 If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to a foreign nation, because he has dealt deceitfully with her.
9 If he designated her for his son, then he will deal with her according to the customary rights of daughters.
10 If he takes another wife, he must not diminish the first one's food, her clothing, or her marital rights.
11 If he does not provide her with these three things, then she will go out free, without paying money.
12 "Whoever strikes someone so that he dies must surely be put to death.
13 But if he does not do it with premeditation, but it happens by accident, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee.
14 But if a man willfully attacks his neighbor to kill him cunningly, you will take him even from my altar that he may die.
15 "Whoever strikes his father or his mother must surely be put to death.
16 "Whoever kidnaps someone and sells him, or is caught still holding him, must surely be put to death.
17 "Whoever treats his father or his mother disgracefully must surely be put to death.
18 "If men fight, and one strikes his neighbor with a stone or with his fist and he does not die, but must remain in bed,
19 and then if he gets up and walks about outside on his staff, then the one who struck him is innocent, except he must pay for the injured person's loss of time and see to it that he is fully healed.
20 "If a man strikes his male servant or his female servant with a staff so that he or she dies as a result of the blow, he will surely be punished.
21 However, if the injured servant survives one or two days, the owner will not be punished, for he has suffered the loss.
22 "If men fight and hit a pregnant woman and her child is born prematurely, but there is no serious injury, he will surely be punished in accordance with what the woman's husband demands of him, and he will pay what the court decides.
23 But if there is serious injury, then you will give a life for a life,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
26 "If a man strikes the eye of his male servant or his female servant so that he destroys it, he will let the servant go free as compensation for the eye.
27 If he knocks out the tooth of his male servant or his female servant, he will let the servant go free as compensation for the tooth.
28 "If an ox gores a man or a woman so that either dies, then the ox must surely be stoned and its flesh must not be eaten, but the owner of the ox will be acquitted.
29 But if the ox had the habit of goring, and its owner was warned, and he did not take the necessary precautions, and then it killed a man or a woman, the ox must be stoned and the man must be put to death.
30 If a ransom is set for him, then he must pay the redemption for his life according to whatever amount was set for him.
31 If the ox gores a son or a daughter, the owner will be dealt with according to this rule.
32 If the ox gores a male servant or a female servant, the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver, and the ox must be stoned.
33 "If a man opens a pit or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,
34 the owner of the pit must repay the loss. He must give money to its owner, and the dead animal will become his.
35 If the ox of one man injures the ox of his neighbor so that it dies, then they will sell the live ox and divide its proceeds, and they will also divide the dead ox.
36 Or if it is known that the ox had the habit of goring, and its owner did not take the necessary precautions, he must surely pay ox for ox, and the dead animal will become his.

2 If H3588 CONJ thou buy H7069 a Hebrew H5680 TMS servant H5650 NMS , six H8337 RFS years H8141 NFP he shall serve H5647 : and in the seventh H7637 he shall go out H3318 VQY3MS free H2670 for nothing H2600 ADV .
3 If H518 PART he came in H935 VQY3MS by himself H1610 , he shall go out H3318 VQY3MS by himself H1610 : if H518 PART he H1931 PPRO-3MS were married H1167 CMS , then his wife H802 NFS shall go out H3318 with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
4 If H518 PART his master H113 have given H5414 VQY3MS him a wife H802 NFS , and she have born H3205 him sons H1121 NMP or H176 CONJ daughters H1323 ; the wife H802 D-NFS and her children H3206 shall be H1961 VQY3FS her master H113 \'s , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS shall go out H3318 VQY3MS by himself H1610 .
5 And if H518 W-PART the servant H5650 shall plainly say H559 , I love H157 VQQ1MS my master H113 , my wife H802 CFS-1MS , and my children H1121 ; I will not H3808 NADV go out H3318 VQY1MS free H2670 :
6 Then his master H113 shall bring H5066 him unto H413 PREP the judges H430 D-EDP ; he shall also bring H5066 him to H413 PREP the door H1817 , or H176 CONJ unto H413 PREP the door post H4201 ; and his master H113 shall bore his ear through H7527 with an awl H4836 ; and he shall serve H5647 him forever H5769 L-NMS .
7 And if H3588 a man H376 NMS sell H4376 his daughter H1323 to be a maidservant H519 , she shall not H3808 NADV go out H3318 as the menservants H5650 do H3318 .
8 If H518 PART she please not H7451 AFS her master H113 , who H834 RPRO hath betrothed H3259 her to himself , then shall he let her be redeemed H6299 : to sell H4376 her unto a strange H5237 AMS nation H5971 he shall have no H3808 ADV power H4910 , seeing he hath dealt deceitfully H898 with her .
9 And if H518 W-PART he have betrothed H3259 her unto his son H1121 , he shall deal H6213 VQY3MS with her after the manner H4941 of daughters H1323 .
10 If H518 PART he take H3947 him another H312 wife ; her food H7607 , her raiment H3682 , and her duty of marriage H5772 , shall he not H3808 NADV diminish H1639 .
11 And if H518 W-PART he do H6213 VQY3MS not H3808 NADV these H428 PMP three H7969 unto her , then shall she go out H3318 free H2600 ADV without H369 NPAR money H3701 NMS .
12 He that smiteth H5221 a man H376 NMS , so that he die H4191 , shall be surely put to death H4191 VQFA .
13 And if H834 RPRO a man lie not in wait H6658 , but God H430 deliver H579 him into his hand H3027 ; then I will appoint H7760 W-VQQ1MS thee a place H4725 NUM-MS whither H834 RPRO he shall flee H5127 .
14 But if H3588 W-CONJ a man H376 NMS come presumptuously H2102 upon H5921 PREP his neighbor H7453 NMS-3MS , to slay H2026 him with guile H6195 ; thou shalt take H3947 VQY2MS-3MS him from M-PREP mine altar H4196 , that he may die H4191 .
15 And he that smiteth H5221 his father H1 CMS-3MS , or his mother H517 , shall be surely put to death H4191 VQFA .
16 And he that stealeth H1589 a man H376 NMS , and selleth H4376 him , or if he be found H4672 in his hand H3027 , he shall surely be put to death H4191 VQFA .
17 And he that curseth H7043 his father H1 CMS-3MS , or his mother H517 , shall surely be put to death H4191 VQFA .
18 And if H3588 men H376 NMS strive together H7378 , and one H376 NMS smite H5221 another H7453 NMS-3MS with a stone H68 , or H176 CONJ with his fist H106 , and he die H4191 VQY3MS not H3808 W-NPAR , but keepeth H5307 his bed H4904 :
19 If H518 PART he rise again H6965 VQY3MS , and walk H1980 abroad H2351 BD-NMS upon H5921 PREP his staff H4938 , then shall he that smote H5221 him be quit H5352 : only H7535 ADV he shall pay H5414 VHFA for the loss of his time H7674 , and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed H7495 .
20 And if H3588 a man H376 NMS smite H5221 his servant H5650 , or H176 CONJ his maid H519 , with a rod H7626 , and he die H4191 under H8478 NMS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS ; he shall be surely punished H5358 .
21 Notwithstanding H389 ADV , if H518 PART he continue H5975 VQY3MS a day H3117 NMS or H176 CONJ two H3117 NUM-MS , he shall not H3808 NADV be punished H5358 VOY3MS : for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS is his money H3701 .
22 If H3588 men H376 strive H5327 , and hurt H5062 a woman H802 NFS with child H2030 , so that her fruit H3206 depart H3318 from her , and yet no H3808 W-NPAR mischief H611 follow H1961 VQY3MS : he shall be surely punished H6064 , according as H834 K-RPRO the woman H802 D-NFS \'s husband H1167 CMS will lay H7896 VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP-3MS him ; and he shall pay H5414 W-VQQ3MS as the judges H6414 determine .
23 And if H518 W-PART any mischief H611 follow H1961 VQY3MS , then thou shalt give H5414 life H5315 GFS for H8478 NMS life H5315 GFS ,
24 Eye H5869 NMS for H8478 NMS eye H5869 NMS , tooth H8127 for H8478 NMS tooth H8127 , hand H3027 NFS for H8478 NMS hand H3027 NFS , foot H7272 NFS for H8478 NMS foot H7272 NFS ,
25 Burning H3555 for H8478 NMS burning H3555 , wound H6482 for H8478 NMS wound H6482 , stripe H2250 for H8478 NMS stripe H2250 .
26 And if H3588 a man H376 NMS smite H5221 the eye H5869 CMS of his servant H5650 , or H176 CONJ the eye H5869 CMS of his maid H519 , that it perish H7843 ; he shall let him go H7971 VPY3MS-3MS free H2670 for his eye\'s sake H8478 NMS .
27 And if H518 W-PART he smite out H5307 his manservant H5650 \'s tooth H8127 , or H176 CONJ his maidservant H519 \'s tooth H8127 ; he shall let him go H7971 VPY3MS-3MS free H2670 for his tooth\'s sake H8478 NMS .
28 If H3588 an ox H7794 CMS gore H5055 a man H376 NMS or H176 CONJ a woman H802 NFS , that they die H4191 : then the ox H7794 shall be surely stoned H5619 , and his flesh H1320 CMS-3MS shall not H3808 W-NPAR be eaten H398 ; but the owner H1167 of the ox H7794 shall be quit H5355 .
29 But if H518 W-PART the ox H7794 CMS were wont to push with his horn H5056 in time past H8543 , and it hath been testified H5749 to his owner H1167 , and he hath not H3808 W-NPAR kept him in H8104 , but that he hath killed H4191 a man H376 NMS or H176 CONJ a woman H802 NFS ; the ox H7794 shall be stoned H5619 , and his owner H1167 CMP-3MS also H1571 W-CONJ shall be put to death H4191 .
30 If H518 PART there be laid H7896 on H5921 PREP-3MS him a sum of money H3724 NMS , then he shall give H5414 W-VQQ3MS for the ransom H6306 of his life H5315 NMS-3MS whatsoever H3605 K-NMS is laid H7896 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him .
31 Whether H176 CONJ he have gored H5055 a son H1121 , or H176 CONJ have gored H5055 a daughter H1323 , according to this H2088 D-PMS judgment H4941 shall it be done H6213 unto him .
32 If H518 PART the ox H7794 shall push H5055 a manservant H5650 NMS or H176 CONJ a maidservant H519 ; he shall give H5414 VHFA unto their master H113 thirty H7970 MMP shekels H8255 of silver H3701 NMS , and the ox H7794 shall be stoned H5619 .
33 And if H3588 CONJ a man H376 NMS shall open H6605 a pit H953 , or H176 CONJ if H3588 CONJ a man H376 NMS shall dig H3738 a pit H953 , and not H3808 W-NPAR cover H3680 it , and an ox H7794 NMS or H176 CONJ an ass H2543 fall H5307 therein H8033 ADV-3FS ;
34 The owner H1167 CMS of the pit H953 shall make it good H7999 VPY3MS , and give H7725 VHY3MS money H3701 NMS unto the owner H1167 of them ; and the dead H4191 beast shall be H1961 VQY3MS his .
35 And if H3588 one man H376 NMS \'s ox H7794 hurt H5062 another H7453 NMS-3MS \'s , that he die H4191 ; then they shall sell H4376 the live H2416 ox H7794 CMS , and divide H2673 the money H3701 of it ; and the dead H4191 ox also H1571 W-CONJ they shall divide H2673 .
36 Or H176 CONJ if it be known H3045 that H3588 CONJ the ox H7794 CMS hath used to push H5056 in time past H8543 , and his owner H1167 CMP-3MS hath not H3808 W-NPAR kept him in H8104 ; he shall surely pay H7999 ox H7794 CMS for H8478 NMS ox H7794 ; and the dead H4191 shall be H1961 VQY3MS his own .
